Congestions as well as CO2 emissions and air pollution can be reduced by stimulating a change in the modal split, away from fossil fueled car traffic and towards walking, biking, and public transport. This shift requires not only alternative options, but also for these options to be appealing. Whilst addressing the modal split, the Multiply cities had to address practical matters like safety and affordability, but also intangible ones like providing enjoyable environments for walking and biking, or changing the stigma attached to public transport. An understanding of local qualities, topography and culture is required.
